A Message from Senator Enzi
Summertime brings out the best Wyoming has to offer – plenty of outdoor activities, celebrations, parades and rodeos bring families and friends together. Wyoming works hard and plays hard. I try to travel back home to Wyoming every weekend and the summer season is one of my favorites, especially when I have time to fish. I hope to see many of you over the next few months enjoying the beautiful outdoors.

Enzi urges common sense in shaping health care reform
Senator Enzi has been working on the health care reform. There are three committees primarily responsible for health care – the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, the Finance Committee and the Budget Committee – and Senator Enzi is the only senator on all three. As leaders in the majority party push to meet a tight and arbitrary deadline, Enzi keeps talking with senators on both sides of the aisle to draft a true bipartisan bill. In order to achieve that, he says the bill needs to start as a blank slate with ideas offered by and taken from both Democrats and Republicans. “Health care reform will affect not just the pocketbooks but the lives of every single American, and if it’s done wrong, Congress might not be able to go back and fix it. That’s why we need to roll up our sleeves and work together on a solution that can have the support of 75 or 80 senators, not just 51,” Enzi said. Enzi opposes government-run health care because “everyone knows the government has its hands full just running government.”
Victory – guns in parks signed into law
Senator Enzi and the Wyoming delegation won the fight to keep gun owners’ rights fully intact by pushing against a rule that prohibited gun owners from carrying weapons in national parks and wildlife refuges. President Obama signed the Credit Cardholder’s Bill of Rights Act of 2009 on May 26, which included language the delegation fought for to ensure Second Amendment rights are not infringed upon for law abiding weapon owners. The bill will make gun laws the same in national parks and wildlife refuges as they are outside of those areas. “The constitution has spoken. No political party in Washington is above the Second Amendment. It is a good day for gun owners, especially gun owners in Wyoming,” Enzi said. The new law will go into effect next year.
National Day of the American Cowboy July 25
The Senate passed a resolution introduced by Senator Enzi that will honor the accomplishments and contributions of cowboys across the nation. Wyoming residents can mark their calendars for July 25 to celebrate the National Day of the American Cowboy. This is the fifth annual National Day of the American Cowboy since Senator Craig Thomas began the tradition in 2005. Enzi has continued the tradition in honor of Thomas’ legacy. “I’m proud to be from a state that continues to live the cowboy tradition every day. Their contributions have helped shape what it means to be an American and have created a high standard we can all strive to meet. I am proud to continue Senator Thomas’ tradition of recognizing the many contributions cowboys have made to our country. I look forward to celebrating the National Day of the American Cowboy,” Enzi said. To get a dose of the cowboy spirit, Senator Enzi recommends the book Cowboy Ethics by James P. Owen.
